Slavery is legalized in Massachusetts.

December 10, 1641

In adopting the Body of Liberties, Massachusetts becomes the first English colony to legalize slavery – but only in some cases. According to one passage of the new laws, “There shall never be any bond slaverie, villanage or Captivitie amongst us unless it be lawful Captives taken in just warres, and such strangers as willingly selle themselves or are sold to us.”
